Hilary Corna knew exactly what she was supposed to do as an American college graduate with a business degree find a decent job, move to a city and settle down with the man she loved. But she was anything but a typical twenty-two-year-old college graduate. Against everyones advice, she purchased a one-way ticket to Singapore in hopes of starting her career in Asia. She left home with just one suitcase, a love for Asian culture, and a determination to succeed.
What could have ended in failure turns into the greatest adventure of her life, complete with the challenges of working as the “one white face” of Toyota Motor Asia Pacific. Along with her new career came the thrills of traveling to exotic destinations, the pain of living twelve time zones away from loved ones, and the birth of new friendships across cultures. Over the next three years, Hilary studies kaizen, a business method and management style for problem solving, and applies it during her work with dealerships in the Philippines and India. She blossoms under the guidance of Japanese big bosses who develop from mentors into friends and father figures.
With a conversational tone and brutal honesty, Hilary invites readers along on her journey of becoming a global citizen—a journey where she discovers the beauty of life and explores her own identity not as one white face, but as a member of humanity.
One White Face eBook Hilary Corna
I heard Hilary speak at a Conference for College Woman Student Leaders at the University of Maryland and was inspired by her story. Of course she finished her speech on a cliff hanger and the whole audience was dying to hear the rest! One White Face did not disappoint. I loved reading her account of traveling/working abroad and being immersed in cultures around the world. Living in NYC that resonated with me. Her ability and willingness to take risks is AMAZING. Buying a one way ticket to another country around the world is mind blowing to me but it just shows you that if there is a will there is a way!
Close to a year ago now my Dad got extremely sick very suddenly and I put my entire life on hold (including plans to travel). Thankfully, he has made a miraculous recovery and I now feel more comfortable leaving home to study abroad. This book really gave me the push I needed to get out of my comfort zone and apply for a three week course abroad. There is no time like the present!

One White Face eBook Hilary Corna Reviews
Hilary has a great style and writes with a truth and passion. It's a great read and you get to know the author and see the world through her eyes.
"One White Face" is a very entertaining book that talks about the issues faced by a western single woman in her 20's trying to thrive in Asia -and succeeding in doing so. The book provides a very accurate description of the life for most ex-pats in Asia nowadays, a lot of information on Asia's business culture (specifically the japanese Kaizen), as well as funny anecdotes from time to time that make it a light but very informative reading. I strongly recommend this book to every person thinking about venturing in Asia, the lessons learned from Hilary's experience are highly encouraging for anyone.
I first came to know about her through a campus event where she was the speaker. And it was her speech that spurred me to buy her book and read it as soon as I could because 1. the career and success she's had so far is pretty incredible, you must admit; I wanted to learn more about her experiences; 2. as a person, not as an author trying to promote her book, I could tell that her ultimate goal was really to help other students follow their dreams and succeed. I really believed that and saw her vision, and I came out of that event inspired and dared. Dared to dream and dared to stand out.
I bring this up because hearing her speak, I could hear the passion in her voice, and that first experience made the experience of reading the book all the more valuable.
To those of you wondering whether this book is for you, I suggest you check out her TedTalks on youtube first, and see if you won't be convinced to join in her vision as well.
I guess in the end, there are different takeaways for everyone, whether it be how to assimilate to a different culture, value of old and new relationships, perseverance, the will to succeed despite adversity, and general insight about how to go about starting a career in a different country. The most important for me was the inspiration and the motivation. Really, what have we got to fear? Ms. Corna's fortitude and daring attitude are what some of us can use and apply to our own lives.
The book itself isn't perfect. She does include a lot of details about aspects of her personal life that could have been left out, but whatever, they were entertaining to read. The final point is as a soon-to-be college graduate ready to embark on my own journey, I felt like I was making a personal investment in myself by reading this book. Maybe so will you. Check her out on TedTalks. She's a real person who's honestly passionate about what she's doing. Spread her story and let it influence as many people as it can. And don't forget to dare to be different )
The first hand account of Ms. Corna's experience in Asia is inspiring and motivational. Her daring mindset to go to Asia right out of college without a concrete plan turned into an amazing experience. After reading her book, it has given me motivation to strive for much more. One of the things I lack is the courage to take chances due to the fear of failure and her book has inspired me to have a daring mindset.
I don't know what it is, but this story drew me in. Hilary has a great way of drawing people to her story, even more so because I feel a personal connection as if our stories were developing on the same thread at similar points of our lives. When the thread split, she went her way and I went the other way by getting married, getting a job and starting a family. I couldn't put the book down and enjoyed it. I wanted more depth and more stories!! I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt, so I think there should be a continuation...
The trouble I ran into while reading this book was countless grammatical errors. At first, I started notating them in my thinking I would kindly let her know about these errors, but it got to the point that it began to interrupt my enjoyment of the book and was taking more time in notating them that I stopped.
I gave it 4 stars because I did enjoy the book - it was great to read about her experiences through her eyes - I love stories like this especially when they involve Japan/Asia. If the sample reading peaks your interest, and you can look past the grammatical mistakes, you will enjoy it as much as I did.
I bought this book after meeting the author, Hilary Corna. The depth of Hilary's writing was amazing, and there are certain parts where she really conveys the emotions that she was feeling through her written words. The book was interesting to me as a study in Japanese business culture as well. Hilary's life was forever changed as a result of taking a chance on trying to find work halfway around the world, finding that work and then living as the only 'white face' at her Japanese-dominated office, My perception of the 'typical Japanese businessman' was altered as well. Hilary developed several relationships with her Japanese bosses whereby her bosses became her guardian in the workplace. You will find this book to be engaging, thought-provoking, funny and very interesting.
I heard Hilary speak at a Conference for College Woman Student Leaders at the University of Maryland and was inspired by her story. Of course she finished her speech on a cliff hanger and the whole audience was dying to hear the rest!
